Jerry Harju's Latest
book, Northern Memories, is the fourth in the ever-popular
"Northern" series. Adhering to the format of Northern Reflections,
Northern D'Lights, and Northern Passages, Northern Memories
is a collection of reminiscent stories that will jab the funnybone as
the reader is transported to Upper Michigan back in the 1930's and
'40's. Live through the high excitement and danger when Jerry's mother
tries to learn how to drive his Model A Ford with severely defective
steering. Watching Frankenstein at the Saturday matinee, Jerry
encounters something scarier than the monster on the screen. "The Tooth
Fairy Contract" tells how six-year-old Jerry punishes the dentist bent
on extracting one of his baby teeth.
What could be more thrilling to a young Yooper
than his first camp? Jerry and a pal outfit the camp with furniture
from the town dump and then take the ultimate test--spending the night
in the small cabin. Needless to say, it doesn't go as planned. "First
Romance" relates the agonies of true love in the fourth grade,
complicated by a pair of corduroy knickers.
These and several other stories make Northern Memories
an entertaining and heartwarming reading experience.
"Northern Memories hilariously drives home the
point that although Jerry Harju grew up in a more innocent time, there
was no shortage of challenges."
